Reflection

As I approach the conclusion of my first practicum, I’ve spent time reflecting on how I’ve incorporated technology throughout my teaching journey. One of my most significant discoveries is just how invaluable AI has been in lesson planning. It has become an essential tool for creating lessons and developing questions, activities, and even educational games. By leveraging AI, I’ve been able to cut down on the time I spend planning while still producing detailed and effective lesson plans. This has allowed me to maintain a healthy work-life balance, ensuring that my evenings are not entirely consumed by planning and preparation. I’ve always been eager to include technology in my teaching, but it wasn’t until this practicum that I truly realized its full potential. This course has provided me with a wealth of resources and ideas to integrate into my lessons as I continue to grow as an educator. Through technology, I’ve been able to design lessons that are more engaging and diverse in how ...

Coding For Kids

Image
Coding has recently been added to the school curriculum, so teaching it is necessary, but it can also be used as a fun activity to integrate into any lesson. For me, I created a lesson that has the students make their own Rube Goldberg Machine , as we are learning about simple machines and plan to have the students make their own Goldberg Machine in person to wrap up our unit. Using Scratch they can code their machine. This lesson allows them to create and plan their machine using coding and gives them an idea of how the machines should work.

Creative Lesson

Image
My classmate and I created a lesson plan for a Grade 5 science lesson, including a creative aspect. We decided to use Canva  to have the students create a map showing the climate in a specific region and then have them present it as if they were meteorologists, informing us about the climate of that region and how it affects the people.  We explained this lesson to our peers and we felt this lesson went really well when we presented it to our peers. Canva is easily accessible and easy to use. The options for differentiation including presenting on Canva if certain students did not want to present to the class. Our peers enjoyed the lesson and seemed engaged in what they were being taught. Although we were not able to do the presentations with this group, I do believe that our class would be just as engaged and increase their understanding of climate and how it affects people.

Siksika Nation

Image
The video above is a short presentation about the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation. It touches briefly on their history, language and a few words translated into Siksika and why those words are important to their culture. This is only a very basic understanding of their culture, and I encourage you to do your own research and find out more about their culture and land if this video interests you.

Twitter/ X

@MsKeegan29774           Social media has become a handy tool for teachers, offering a place to swap ideas, share lesson plans, and connect with others in the field. It’s a great way to find inspiration and build a sense of community with fellow educators.              But, in my opinion, social media isn’t always the best place to find reliable teaching resources, especially platforms like X (formerly Twitter). One big issue is that there’s not much fact-checking happening. On X, for example, people can pay for verification badges, which can make it hard to tell if a profile is truly credible or just trying to grab attention. This problem isn't unique to X—most social media platforms have similar issues.           When you see a teaching idea or lesson plan from someone you don’t know, it’s important to remember that what works for one group of students m...

Tech in the Classroom

With every generation, new technology is built to help make jobs easier; AI is that new technology for this generation. There is a lot of good that it can do, but it can also be taken advantage of. It has allowed students to avoid doing their work altogether and use the program to complete it for them. I have used AI in both my studies and my personal life. It can help you write concisely or expand your thoughts into more words. It can edit your work for you and even give you ideas for your writing. In my personal life, I have used it to help me write emails to sound more professional. I have also used it to help me create invites with wording that explains everything in non-confusing wording. I have used it for school to create abstracts of my papers, help give me ideas for assignments, and reword instructions to help me understand them. If used properly, AI can be a beneficial tool, but it can also prevent students from learning. ...
